011. Lasik…. But why surfing afterwards?

I studied at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia for the fall semester of my junior year. It was a wonderful experience full of even more interesting experiences.

One of the things I missed out on was an attempt at surfing at Bondi Beach.
Why?
I’m blind as a bat without my glasses. (For you contact users, I’m -7.50 in my left eye, and -7.00 in my right.)
I can see about a handspand in front of my face.
When I go Whitewater Rafting, I have a ridiculous pair of sports goggles I whip on and off at every bend of the river. And I hate it.

I couldn’t find extreme goggles while in Sydney (and I probably would’ve thought them too expensive to buy if I had.)
And after calling the Surfing School they thought it wise I sit that one out.

I definitely regret that — I don’t think I’ll actually be any good at surfing.
But it’s something I always wanted to try, but have literally been unable to do so because I’d be danger to myself and others.

I’m a water nut. I’ve lived along a major waterway all my life. Boating is a hobby. I can legally operate a Waverunner or JetSki in Pennsylvania. So I guess I’m naturally drawn to water activies.

But I welcome the failure of any surfing attemptĀ I might make.
My eyes are just hopefully sturdy enough to survive a Lasik procedure.

Here’s hoping!
